New Capital Region alternative newsweekly to launch in November

Leadership has been confirmed for The Alt, the new alt media company being developed by The Daily Gazette, Overit and Proctors. Set to launch in mid-November, The Alt will be overseen by Editor/Associate Publisher David Howard King. Alay Medina will be sales director. Both have roots in Metroland, the region’s previous alt weekly.

“We’re thrilled to have secured King and Medina in the The Alt’s leadership positions,” say Overit Principals Dan and Michelle Dinsmore. “Their commitment to the region, the creative economy and the success of The Alt has been obvious since our initial meetings with them. They each have vast professional and personal experiences that will enrich content, while also bringing fresh ideas that will set The Alt apart in this market and nationally.”

A multiple New York Press Association Award winner, King has spent nearly eight years covering corruption, policy and elections as the state government editor for Manhattan-based website Gotham Gazette. In 2012, King served as the first New York reporter for the Center for Public Integrity’s State Integrity Investigation.

A Hudson native who began his career covering politics, civil rights and poverty as a Metroland staffer, while also penning arts profiles and music reviews, King will be charged in the coming weeks with hiring staff; contracting freelance writers and photographers; and setting the course for print and web content.

“The Alt is a dream come true,” says King. “I look forward to sharing our vision for narrative journalism, unparalleled coverage of the arts and a website designed to bring the Capital Region together. At The Alt we will tell the stories that aren’t being told; give a voice to those who aren’t being heard; and connect communities across the Capital Region.”

Medina, a glass sculptor born in Caracas, Venezuela and raised in Schenectady, has an extensive background in sales, art and education, as well as in community involvement and volunteerism. She served as account executive at Metroland, and more recently as assistant sales manager for Inova LLC in Altamont.

Medina will immediately begin building an advertising base for The Alt.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled with the pending launch of The Alt,” Medina says. “With my experience at Metroland, I know first hand how necessary an alternative source for news, art and entertainment is to the community. We have all the elements and passion in place to ensure great success. I’m honored to be a part of this venture.”

The Alt, a new and different voice in Upstate New York, is an alt media collaboration between Proctors, The Daily Gazette and Overit. It combines a well-curated, thought-provoking newsweekly (available at 400 distribution locations) with a constantly updated web portal to goings-on in the eight county Capital Region; enticing new visitors and speaking dynamically to young locals and travelers alike with a vibrant, irreverent and tech-savvy flavor.
