A Friend of a Friend: Tales from The Underground Railroad

Public performance of the haunting local story of Solomon Northup,
a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery

ALBANY, N.Y.—Feb. 25, 2019— Capital Repertory Theatre’s spring On-The-Go! production of A Friend of a Friend: Tales from The Underground Railroad will play one public performance, 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2 at theREP.

The show, which tours schools starting Feb. 25, tells the story of several African-American heroes from the Capital Region—notably, Solomon Northup and Stephen & Harriet Myers.

Northup, though born in the free north, was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. Over the course of twelve years, Northup worked to get a letter out to his wife, Anne, and to New York politicians who could help prove he was a free man. Anne also worked to get testimonials on his behalf. At the same point in time, Albany’s Stephen & Harriet Myers owned The Northern Star and Freemen’s Advocate—an abolitionist newspaper run by an association of colored persons devoted to the cause of “Temperance, Reform, Education and Equal Rights!”

Friend, written by Producing Artistic Director Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill and Jill Rafferty-Weinisch, features a stellar cast of three, including On-The-Go! veteran Justin Friello, who last appeared in the fall 2018 tour of Sleepy Hollow.

Friello has also toured in past productions of Shakespeare: The Remix and They Built America as well as MainStage entries Camelot and The Secret Garden. He will be at theREP again this spring in Shakespeare in Love.

Friend, helmed by theREP’s Assistant Artistic Director Margaret E. Hall, fresh off a MainStage hit with Red Maple, also includes two NYC actors making Capital Region debuts—Adrian Kiser and Joel Ashur.
