Developing relationships alongside world premieres
Suzanne Bradbeer a submission finalist at the very first NEXT ACT! summit, is back again!
ALBANY—Capital Repertory Theatre is a place where relationships blossom alongside new productions and familiar tales.
Suzanne Bradbeer, a finalist in the very first NEXT ACT! New Play Summit, will host “Page to Stage: Consider the Sparrow” Wednesday, April 17. Experience the 25-minute short film based on her play “The God Game” at the summit. There will be a panel discussion following the film.
“After we performed ‘The God Game,’ it became a published script and went on to numerous other theatres. I think it’s had 12 productions around the nation, which is really amazing,” Associate Artistic Director Margaret Hall said.
Bradbeer credits the script’s success to theREP and NEXT ACT! She said, “It was so enthusiastically received [at the summit.] It was so just thrumming with interest and people asking questions and people really being interested in the subject and the actors all brought their A-game…It just leapt off the page through them and because of that really wonderful reception and what I learned through that first production at Capital Repertory Theatre, it went on to have about a dozen more productions so far and then the film.”
“The fact that it was so beautifully presented just made that difference in it having a further life, having that cast at theREP,” Bradbeer said.
Most excitingly about this tale is not the story from page to stage to screen, but the relationship that developed between theREP and Bradbeer. She’s become an active part of the NEXT ACT! Summit and had a second play, “Naked Influence,” premiere through the NEXT ACT! process.
“There’s a variety of different ways NEXT ACT! and theREP maintain new play development and work with playwrights,” Hall added. “We love knowing, and hope continue seeing, the playwrights have success in other theatres.”
Bradbeer has also participated in past summits as a coach during the Young Playwrights workshops. She’s excited to be returning to Capital Repertory Theatre once again.
“I’m so interested to talk to people who may have seen the production and also because Yvonne [Perry] will be there, and she was the original Lisa.”’
