Great Scott! “Back to the Future” gets gears turning at Proctors

Broadway musical is teching, previewing production on MainStage

SCHENECTADY—The Capital Region is in for the thrill of the century! “Back to the Future: The Musical,” the award-winning production, its making the nationwide tour preview on the MainStage at Proctors in Schenectady Thursday, June 6.

In downtown, the gears have been turning for weeks before the production hits the road. Stage managers, crew members, technicians and producers have been finagling, changing and adapting as the company practices performances, figures out lights, sounds and the magic to hit show perfection.

Not only is “Back to the Future: The Musical” on the MainStage for four performances, but they’ve made Proctors their home while they build the show from the ground up and master the performance audiences will see on the nation-wide tour.

Proctors Collaborative CEO Phillip Morris said, “Every time a show does its tech and opens in Schenectady, I smile.  It means we, in the Capital Region, will be the first to see the touring production of major Broadway show.

“It means we get to connect with creators, designers and performers, and often with our many theater students. It also means we are hosting Broadway guests in Schenectady for weeks! They stay overnight, they eat, they shop and they drink a lot of coffee!”

Based on the beloved, cinematic classic, “Back to the Future” is now a Broadway musical that won the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, four WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Musical and the Broadway World Award for Best New Musical.

When Marty McFly finds himself transported back to 1955 in a time machine built by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, he accidentally changes the course of history. The movie magic hits the stage and when the DeLorean hits 88mph, it’ll change musical theatre history forever.
