Statement on Governor Hochul’s Budget from the Upstate Historic Theatres

Albany, NY (Jan. 23) – Alive Downtowns, the visionary program aimed at revitalizing New York’s downtown cities through investment in historic theatres, thanks Governor Hochul for a commitment to the arts in her proposed budget. We are, however, disappointed the governor again did not support our modest budget request that will be invested directly into our upstate cities.

Alive Downtowns’ 13 cherished venues serve as cultural and educational hubs as well as economic engines, driving local economies and fostering vibrant neighborhoods. The initiative has reignited a wave of community support, with organizations statewide voicing their commitment to safeguarding these irreplaceable institutions.

The historic upstate theatres and their community supporters cite compelling data demonstrating the positive economic impact of historic theatres: every dollar spent on a ticket generates additional spending on local restaurants, retail and accommodations. By supporting Alive Downtowns and including it in her upcoming budget amendments, the governor has the opportunity to amplify these benefits and ensure these institutions remain vital cornerstones of their communities.

We respectfully request Governor Hochul include our $10 million request in her upcoming budget amendments and that the Senate and Assembly continue to support our efforts.
