Proctors opens doors wider for all audiences with first-ever sensory friendly performance

KultureCity certification transforms Proctors into a more welcoming space for individuals with sensory needs
SCHENECTADY— For almost 100 years, Proctors has welcomed audiences from all walks of life through its doors, and CEO Philip Morris refers often to the theatre as “the community living room.” Proctors has echoed with applause for Broadway shows, concerts, film festivals, and community events, but until recently, there was one group that often found the experience overwhelming: individuals with sensory needs.
During the last few months, Proctors took the initiative to become a sensory-friendly-certified building with KultureCity®. Staff and volunteers underwent specialized training to recognize and assist individuals with sensory processing disorders. Proctors ordered sensory bags, available at the new Accessibility Desk for every show, that include noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and verbal cue cards, and also designated quiet areas within the venue for anyone needing a break.
The first Sensory Inclusive™ performance will take place 10:30 a.m. Dec. 6 when “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” comes to the MainStage for the holidays!
Proctors Collaborative President Jean Leonard said, “We are always looking for ways to open our doors a little wider, to make sure our theatres are available and accessible to all. KultureCity® provides Proctors with measurable, attainable goals that when met will ensure that those in need of sensory services will feel more welcome and understood here. We are the community’s living room. We want our living room to be as comfortable as it can be — for all!”
It’s been a long time coming for Proctors, initially planning their first sensory friendly performance in the summer of 2020 with Disney’s “The Lion King.” However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that show never happened. “The Lion King” did return in 2023, but wanting to be prepared, and with a need to do it right, Proctors held off on including a sensory-friendly performance.
Recognizing the need for accessibility for everyone, the leadership at Proctors partnered with KultureCity®, a nonprofit dedicated to making public spaces sensory inclusive. The certification process was thorough and thoughtful to make sure everyone felt welcome and comfortable in the building.
Now, with tools and training in their repertoire, Proctors is proud and excited to be hosting their first sensory-friendly performance and hopes to have many more in the future.
