Schenectady-Saratoga Symphony Orchestra holiday tradition returns for two performances at Universal Preservation Hall

SARATOGA SPRINGS (Dec. 6) – This holiday season, the Schenectady-Saratoga Symphony Orchestra brings back the magic of Poinsettia Pops with two joyful performances at Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. Featuring a repertoire of timeless holiday classics, this cherished tradition showcases the talents of guest soloists Jeanine Ouderkirk, Mowgli Giannitti and Elizabeth Sterling, who are thrilled to return for their second year of festive collaboration with these guest artists.

“There’s a certain comfort in performing alongside friends and colleagues,” shares Giannitti. “It creates a grounded, focused energy, allowing us to deliver something truly special to the audience.” Sterling adds, “Performing with an orchestra is a magical experience. The lush sounds surrounding you, coupled with the infectious joy from the audience, make this concert unforgettable.”

Poinsettia Pops is more than a concert—it’s an experience that unites the community in the joy of music and the spirit of the season. Artistic Director/Conductor Glen Cortese and the guest artists hope to enlighten patrons and help them gain a deeper appreciation of the program with the pre-show talk for both performances.

Each soloist brings their own flair to the program, including Giannitti’s interpretation of “Blue Christmas.” “I’m diving deep to make it my own,” he says. “The timelessness of holiday music lies in its emotional resonance and shared harmonic language.” Sterling describes the concert as “nostalgic, celebratory and luminous,” sentiments that promise to warm the hearts of all who attend.

“This is the one time a year I get to sing with an orchestra,” says Ouderkirk. “It’s thrilling to feel the power of the SSSO behind my voice.” Giannitti agrees, noting the connection holiday music creates for both artists and the audience.
