Beatles expert Scott Freiman returns to the GE Theatre at Proctors Saturday, Feb. 27, offering two of his popular lecture presentations, Say The Word: Deconstructing Rubber Soul (1:30 p.m.) and A Trip Through Strawberry Fields (7:30 p.m.).
Freiman, composer, producer, educator and operator of the state of the art music/video house Second Act Studio, has been a mainstay in the GE Theatre over the past five years, guiding curious full houses through multiple aspects of The Beatles’ history.
With Say The Word, Freiman walks Beatles fans young and old through the creation of the classic Rubber Soul, with rare audio and video from the studio and the stage.
In October 1965, The Beatles were faced with an impossible task—producing a new album of original music in time for a Christmas release. Within a month, the band had emerged with what many consider to be one of their greatest albums, Rubber Soul. The quartet even had time to create a double A-sided single, “We Can Work It Out” backed with “Day Tripper.” Both sides of the 45, as well as the album, hit number one on the charts.
Freiman will bring Rubber Soul favorites like “Norwegian Wood,” “In My Life” and “Nowhere Man” to the fore, unveiling the stories behind the songs.
The 1967 single “Strawberry Fields Forever” is one of the high points of The Beatles’ career, as well as one of the most influential songs in all of popular music. Freiman’s evening program on Feb. 27 will be a magical tour through the enduring masterpiece.
“As a composer and producer, I have always been fascinated by The Beatles’ innovations in songwriting and recording,” says Freiman. “It’s truly exciting to listen to songs we know so well evolve from a home demo to a finished recording. There’s a reason why The Beatles’ music continues to strike a chord with new generations of fans, 40 years after their last recording.”
Again using rare audio and video clips, as well as anecdotes about the creation of the songs, A Trip Through Strawberry Fields explores the groundbreaking production techniques that went into this landmark piece of music history. In addition to “Strawberry Fields Forever,” Freiman will also explore the creation of the songs “Penny Lane” and “A Day In The Life.”
