Longtime Schenectady music store to occupy space vacated by Van Curler Music

Hermie’s Music, a longtime city institution, will relocate from its current Jay Street location to the Arcade at Proctors, filling the space recently vacated by Van Curler Music. Following a soft opening on Friday, Nov. 18, the 67-year-old business will keep regular hours, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. weekdays; 11a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Sundays.

Founded in 1940, on State Street, by namesake Hermie Frederick, the store carries a full line of musical tools for students and professionals, ranging from guitars and drums to orchestra and band instruments. It will also service select sheet music needs.

In 2012, Hermie’s merged with Albany music retailer John Keal, which has been offering a similar line of products and working closely with music teachers and Capital Region schools since 1930. As part of the opening week festivities, Hermie’s will participate in the John Keal Intermediate and Professional Instrument Fair, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. in the Fenimore Asset Management Gallery at Proctors.

“We are truly excited about the move to the Arcade at Proctors,” says John Keal’s Chris Trombley. “Since we share many of the same customers, it makes perfect sense to be under the same roof.”
