2019 High School Musical Theatre Awards nominees

announced today at Proctors

Winners will travel to New York in June to participate in Jimmy Awards®

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—APRIL 24, 2019—Proctors and The Times Union announced nominees today for the 2019 High School Musical Theatre Awards at Proctors.

Proctors CEO Philip Morris and Times Union Senior Features and Sunday editor Gary Hahn were joined by Proctors Creative Workforce Director Grace Janiszewski for a Facebook Live event filmed by Open Stage Media on the theatre mezzanine.

Some 30 schools participated in the third annual contest, up from 16 schools in 2017 and 23 in 2018. Each of the student theatrical productions was adjudicated on a variety of criteria in a dozen categories.

Best Actor and Best Actress winners will go on to represent the Capital Region at the 11th Annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards®. Nicknamed for legendary producer and theatre owner James Nederlander, the Jimmys® are at the Minskoff Theatre, in New York, Monday, June 24, hosted for the second year by Tony Award®-Winner Ben Platt.

“We knew this program would inspire and encourage students,” said Morris, “but even we are surprised at how fast it’s grown. The Jimmys are a real validation for the work done by schools and Broadway is bigger than ever. We can’t wait to send our kids down.”

Students from all 30 schools will perform at the High School Musical Theatre Awards ceremony, 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11, Mainstage at Proctors.

“I’m excited to see participation by so many schools throughout the region,” said Hahn. “The Times Union is happy to support students and teachers who look to find a place for the arts in their lives, and these theatre awards offer a welcome recognition, too often reserved only for team sports.”
