The irreplaceable voices behind the curtain

Meet one of Proctors volunteers whose passion, commitment, and welcoming presence make the magic possible.

The uplifting community at Proctors Collaborative is uniquely impacted by volunteers, individuals who commit themselves to growing and inspiring the future of theatre in Schenectady. Each volunteer adds their own stitching to the fabric of what makes Proctors an endearing cultural cornerstone in downtown. Raymond Ma has been a part of this stitching for over 20 years — leaving an unforgettable mark on the venue.

“I do enjoy you know, meeting people, especially in the beginning before the show starts…,” Ma noted, touching on how the personal interactions are a highlight that unite patrons with volunteers. Volunteers strengthen not only the temporary audience experience, but the reliable leadership and enrichment that Proctors strives to endure.

Ma, originally born in China, first came to Proctors in 2004 for the famous “Phantom of the Opera.” Since then, he has worked his way from usher to head usher ensuring everyone who walks into a theatre has a positive experience.

Ma’s position includes coming to the theatre early on show days, guiding audience members to their seats, and staying after the performance to clean and lock all doors to follow safety precautions. He references his upbringing as the foundation of his belief that he will help wherever help is accepted, without the need for monetary gain; but the environment at Proctors is what fuels his joy.

Volunteers receive benefits like concession discounts across all venues, an engaging outlet to serve and share their skillset, along with accessibility to performances. Ma personally looked forward to the dazzling recent tour of “Moulin Rouge,” due to the costumes and choreography, “It’s beautiful…I’m amazed.”

Beyond their responsibilities, the individuality and dedication of volunteers is irreplaceable.
