West Family Scholarship Fund Launches to Support Next Generation of New York Arts Leaders
ALBANY, NY (Oct. 20) — The West Family Scholarship Fund, in partnership with Capital Repertory Theatre, is launching a new scholarship opportunity to support emerging leaders in New York’s performing arts ecosystem, from performers and creators to the managers and innovators who make the work possible. The selected scholarship recipient may receive $5,000 per year. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years, provided the recipient maintains at least a B average, for a potential total award of up to $20,000. In addition, the recipient will also receive an internship with theREP bridging financial gaps and real-world experience.
The scholarship is designed to help New York students turn their artistic passion into a viable career, whether on stage, backstage, or behind the business of theatre. By helping offset the cost of higher education, the West Family Scholarship Fund aims to bridge the gap between creative passion and professional opportunity and help students build sustainable careers in the arts.
Students may apply through one of two scholarship tracks. One track is open to students pursuing careers as actors, singers, musicians, dancers, writers, directors, choreographers, etc. The second track is designed for students interested in the business and administrative side of the industry.
“A GPA only tells part of a student’s story. Across our community, there are brilliant, hardworking students who earn solid grades while quietly carrying responsibilities or obstacles outside of the classroom that limit what’s visible on paper,” said Michael A. West Jr. “Providing this opportunity isn’t about giving them an extra boost — it’s about clearing the path so these students’ work ethic, talent, and true potential can take center stage.”
As part of the selection process, finalists will participate in a live showcase at Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany, Monday, Feb. 1. Each finalist will be paired with a mentor from theREP to prepare a brief presentation highlighting their work, interests, and professional aspirations.
Finalists will then present before a panel of arts and culture professionals from theREP, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York, The Egg, the Palace Theatre, and The RED Bookshelf. Panelists will respond to the presentations and vote to select the recipient of the scholarship.
Eligible applicants must be high school seniors or a freshman at a New York state college or university, Reside in ZIP codes 12207, 12206, or 12202; be majoring in an arts-related or theater-industry field; and maintain at least a B average. Students can apply through the West Family Scholarship Fund website by Monday, Dec. 7.
