Kate Penn, Proctors new digital content manager, wins Emmy® Award

Video series raises cancer awareness

SCHENECTADY, NY—SEPT. 13, 2017—Proctors Digital Content Manager Kate Penn has won an Emmy® Award in the category of Video Essay (Single Camera Operator) from The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Mid-Atlantic Chapter. The awards were announced Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pa.

Penn, a Scotia native who came to Proctors in May, and has quickly amplified the quantity and quality of the organization’s content, spent the previous decade as a photojournalist at York Daily Record/Sunday News.

In her final months at the paper, Penn created the poignant series “A Father’s Love: Ayden’s Final Days,” focusing on young Ayden Zeigler-Kohler and his steadfast father, Bill Kohler, as they navigated Ayden’s battle with the incurable pediatric cancer DIPG.

Penn, who also interned for the Times Union and Bay City Times, is proud of the series, saying, “The more these videos are shared, the more understanding there will be of DIPG. Bill Kohler is still fighting for research and awareness, and hopefully this project will help in that regard.”
